Seeking Superstars: How to Attract the Top Talent to Your Growing Startup

Posted on January 16, 2017 by Aaron

Your startup is gearing up for hitting it out of the park this year. In order to make this year successful, you already know that you are going to have to hire top talent to show your industry you mean business. With the right people bringing direction and expertise into your startup, you know you have a real chance at becoming a force to reckon with that will set the bar.

What may not quite be clear is how to attract this top talent to your startup and keep from getting hung up on the line. Here are a few tips for going about raising interest with top talent that you need to be aware of upfront.

  • Money Talks

Attracting top talent generally starts by flashing high-value dollar signs in front of qualified candidates. While you may be struggling to justify paying higher dollar amounts for talented individuals who know how to get things done the right way, you should know that low dollar offers simply will not attract top talent.

The individuals who know how to produce also know that they are in high demand and can fetch the big bucks for their services. According to Monster, this issue can be further complicated by an industries median income being on the increase, driving the need for your startup to make an offer that is above average to be competitive in the hiring arena.

  • Create an Attractive Learning Opportunity

Another way to catch the eye of top talent is to run a startup that provides a unique opportunity for top talent to learn valuable new skills they do not already have. One of the reasons top talent ranks so high is because they take jobs that teach them unique skills that set them apart from the crowd.

So, when such opportunities arise, many of these individuals will even sacrifice earnings to invest in picking up skills that will likely pay them handsomely down the road. If you create this unique learning opportunity, then you will find it is much easier to attract top talent to your startup.

  • Third Party Talent

Instead of hiring top talent directly, it is sometimes best to farm out things your company needs done to other businesses who already have top talent whipping problems into shape for their clients. This method of acquiring top talent work for a fraction of the overhead cost is certainly a winning strategy that more and more startups are learning to depend on for their business needs. Whether you need Ottawa tech support or the assistance of a business law firm, you can find plenty of options for third-party servicers.

  • A Professional Front

Even if your startup is not performing as well as you would like, it is critical to put forth a professional front when engaging candidates for hiring that you would consider top talent. While top talent will demand a lot out of the companies they work for, these types of employees actively seek to work for startups that have exceptional reputations. If your startup comes across as less than professional, this may give the impression that your startup does not have its act together. This, in turn, will scare away top talent.

There are many things you can do and offer to attract employees to work for your startup. Unfortunately, attracting just any employee to take charge in your business will not do. You want to attract people who care as much about the success of your startup as you do. In order to make this happen, it is a good idea to ask yourself what you expect out of a startup before you attempt to sell your next job opening to a potential candidate of considerable talent.
