Best Fit: How to Make the Hiring Process Work for Your Business

Posted on November 26, 2018 by Aaron

You want to run a clean and efficient operation. But, a business is only as good as the quality of its employees. For this reason, you must be diligent in hiring the right people for the positions that need to be filled within your organization. This means your hiring process must be top notch. Here are some tips to help your company achieve this goal.

The Interview

The biggest mistake companies make today in the hiring process is that they interview as few candidates as possible, pick the first smooth talker that bites and then they wonder why the individual they did hire bombs out. By actually taking the time to interview more candidates, even if you think you know who you want to hire, you will get a better feel for who is quality and who is blowing smoke in your general direction. By going through each candidate, you will learn things about applicants that you need to know about their work ethic, personal habits and other factors that will impact their ability to perform well in your company. Following up often with your top choices will keep the best candidates interested in what your company wants and what they are offering. Don’t be afraid to hold several rounds of interviews to get a feel for who your candidates truly are.

The Background Check

While a background check cannot always tell you everything you want to know about a job applicant, it can help you to see red flags in a person’s past that may indicate that they are not a good fit for your company. The last thing you want wrecking your business is a person with a history creating problems with fellow employees or important clients. There is something to be said about a job applicant that keeps their nose clean and operates on the level. A background check may not bring up everything you want to know, it’s still important to do.

Doing Your Part

A lot of companies will advertise a job, receive a ton of resumes and toss them aside without ever reading them. If you do not read a significant number of resumes that come in, you will never know if you are passing up excellent candidates that you should be hiring. Beyond just reading a resume, you should actually look into their experience. Some applicants tend to be more humble about their experience and have a lot to offer while other applicants embellish their experience to seem more appealing.

As you read more resumes, it is a good idea to make sure that applicants have kept their licenses and certifications current. This is especially true in companies hiring people who need to be licensed by law. You do not want to waste your time with candidates whose licensing cannot be verified. For example, checking out potential new hires for a hospital with a database like medproid.com can help you find those with current licenses and certifications while weeding out those with issues in other areas. If a doctor is licensed in one area and gets fired for malpractice but doesn’t report that to you, checking with a third party can help you see the whole truth. Third party databases like this can often do on-demand checks through services like healthcare call center verifications if you believe something on their resume looks fishy to you. Don’t feel like you have to either deny a potentially qualified individual because of uncertainty or hire someone with a suspicious background. There are ways to confirm and expand on the information applicants give you.

Finding the best fit for your job openings can be a daunting task. Often it is difficult to judge the fitness of an applicant on the basis of a resume or even an interview. Learning to pick good hires is an art, and it is a skill you must develop in order to ensure the right people get hired to keep your company running like a well-oiled machine.
