How To Think Outside The Box When Hiring For Your Business

Posted on February 7, 2018 by Aaron

Sometimes, the best way to find a good employee is to think outside the box. If you’re looking for great additions to your team, it’s probably time to start looking at new ways to hire. Before you put out your next hiring notice, take some time to look at these three ways your business can find new employees by thinking outside the box.

Pay Attention to Non-Traditional Experience

When most people hire for a position, they’re looking at a very small set of criteria. Unfortunately, some of the best possible candidates miss out on interviews because they don’t fit the right key terms. If you are willing to spend some extra time with resumes, you should be able to find hires that have great experience outside of your own field. An MBA isn’t the only degree that qualifies an applicant for business operations. They have all the soft skills that are unteachable and you can focus on training them on the rest. Don’t limit yourself by only looking at people who have only worked in your field.

Look at Different Degrees

Don’t feel like you can only look at MBAs for your business. There are plenty of good reasons to look at degrees that are related to your business without necessarily falling into the usual formats. Think about a certified behavior analyst or an English major, for example, when you’re looking to fill a position that requires a great deal of interpersonal communication or writing. You might find that non-business majors are the best asset for your business, so don’t limit yourself. If you can’t allow yourself to look outside the business world, do yourself a favor by prioritizing those applicants who have minors or second degrees outside of business.

Look for Self-Starters

If you want someone who can really help your business, look for someone who has been able to help himself or herself in the past. People who have run their own businesses can be huge assets, even if they fail. These are people who tend to be motivated to work harder and longer, and thus will understand everything you have asked of them. Give people who are self-starters a chance to succeed with you and they will take your business with them as they climb the corporate ladder.

Give people who have great skills a chance. Don’t limit yourself by just looking at where they worked or what degree they may have. If you are able to put a little extra effort into looking at what these individuals bring to the table, you might be able to find better employees.
