Recruitment on a Budget

Posted on September 16, 2015 by Aaron

Whenever you are running or managing a business, it is important that you recruit the correct employees for the job to ensure your growth isn’t just in quantity, but in quality as well. Getting the right person on your team can be extremely beneficial; they can bring experience and even enthusiasm into the office that can rub off on your other employees. However, it is often a far more difficult task than expected – you can have a number of obstacles in your way, such as agency fees and poor CV’s coming your way. Trailing through endless CV’s that don’t offer what you need can grow frustrating, and some agencies will charge 20% of the salary you are offering your new employee – which is also very daunting. With this in mind, you might want to find alternative ways to find yourself some candidates for your job.

The first place you should start when posting jobs online are job boards. These are where most job hunters start, and you can get people applying for your job almost immediately, which is ideal if you need the position filled quickly. You can increase your exposure by posting on multiple job boards but this can quickly become time consuming. There are low cost recruitment companies, like Hiring People that offer fixed cost recruitment and can post a job on a hundred job boards for a nominal fee, saving you a lot of time to do more important work.

Another tool that you can use to your advantage is something that most people use, most days. Social media, yes somewhere that a lot of people share photos of their holidays and even their food – is also a useful place to share your job opening. When you advertise online all you have to do is set a status saying that you are looking for help, this immediately can reach a large audience. You can even ask your friends to help you by sharing your post so that it reaches even more people.

Some companies use an employee referral scheme to identify their future employee candidates; this is where you get your team to recommend you people who they feel could be fit for the job at hand. A huge advantage to this is that if you employ the candidates that are recommended to you, then they already know some of the team and it makes their settling in process even easier. You can even encourage your team to actively look for people who might want the job by giving them an incentive to do so, like a bonus if they find someone that is suitable for the job.

Another method you could use is DIY headhunting. This is where you find people you think would be a good fit for the job, and offer them an interview directly. A great tool for this is LinkedIn, as you can search by job title and even employers, if you wish to steal an employee from your competitor. This is a far more time consuming process but it could mean getting someone who is better suited to the job.
