Ethics & Business: How to Avoid These 4 Prominent HR Issues

Posted on February 6, 2017 by Aaron

Your human resources department might not be as glamorous as your sales team, but these specialists are absolutely vital to the success of a company. When HR issues begin to take place, you must have staff members who can quickly resolve the situation. Here are four of the most common HR issues and what can be done to avoid them.

Illegal Recruitment and Hiring Practices

The laws regarding hiring practices are much more complicated than most people realize. That is one of the reasons why it is so important to make sure that your hiring process is legally airtight before you hire a single employee. The easiest way to do this is to have a clear job description for every position you plan on filling. The job description can help you avoid future legal issues such as compensation disputes, discipline problems, internal conflicts, and terminations.

Official Training and Certification

Depending on the size of your company and what industry you are in, your training programs could be a major liability. While employees are typically responsible for state-mandated certifications, your company might still be responsible for ensuring that employees are properly trained. At the very least, you should keep clear records of any training or certification programs that your employees go through.

Wrongful Termination Suits

You should never attempt to handle a wrongful termination suit without a corporate lawyer, such as those from Carter West, by your side. These cases can become extremely complex, and you can still lose quite a bit of money even if your company did absolutely nothing wrong. In many states, companies have just weeks to respond to any illegal termination claims that have been filed by old employees.

Conflict Resolution

As your company continues to grow, your HR team should have a clear program to deal with any conflicts that arise between employees. While many of these issues can be solved with nothing more than a conversation, you always want to prevent them from escalating into something worse. You must make it clear to all of your employees that your HR department is ready to listen to all complaints and they should never attempt to handle these situations alone.

Practically every company will have to deal with various complaints and legal claims, and your HR team is your first line of defense against those issues. When these problems aren’t taken care of immediately, they could result in complex court cases that cost your company millions.
