Business Intelligence: How to Protect Your Online Company from Security Risks

Posted on November 20, 2017 by Aaron

The online world often offers a lot of opportunities for your business to thrive in. The ability to reach a wider customer base, making use of international suppliers, the possibility of being connected in a small but wide global village are some of the benefits that doing business online offers. The benefits are countless. However, online world also offers the potential threats to your business and other security risks. Today hacking, cyber-crime, cyber ransoming, DDoS attacks, cyber fraud are some of the security risks that your business will have to worry about. So here is how you protect your business from all these security risks.

Fortified Passwords

One of the areas that cybercriminals will try to exploit is your passwords. Always ensure that you use strong passwords for your email accounts, website Cpanel, authorization codes are changes regularly. You should never use weak passwords which are simple to crack or easy to guess. Also, you can use browser extensions that remember your passwords and use a master password which is known only by you.

Conduct Regular Risk Assessment

There is a high probability that you do not know how to conduct a risk assessment for your business. You need not worry; there are several reputable agencies online that you can consult to regularly conduct assessments on your website to identify which of your certificates are vulnerable. Such an assessment should provide you with reports and information on what needs your immediate attention. Vulnerabilities are what attackers are looking for to exploit so always remain vigilant. The damage that a single weak or vulnerable code can cause your business is immense.

Firewalls

You should reinforce your website security with strong, impenetrable firewalls. A firewall is a system that is designed to block or keep out unauthorized access to your website or system while at the same time permitting outward communication. Firewalls have been used to protect computers, websites and other devices that connect to the internet. A firewall should detect unauthorized access and notify you or take the command that you have issued hence keeping you safe.

Identity Management System

All the users in your company should be assigned access to the system that is only relevant to their access context. These users should also be tracked with an activity trace feature. The system should also detect foreign access to your company’s network and raise an intrusion alarm. Companies which are paranoid about the security level of their data go to the extent of shutting down the system for a period to ensure that the intruder does not get a chance to penetrate the system. The users should also be educated on the importance of sharing their access details. Also prohibiting external drives such as flash drives in the company’s machines should be in the security policy.

Browsing Behavior

Conduct employee education seminars on how to safely browse the web and also best practices of opening their emails. Hackers are sending anonymous emails with malicious attachments which automatically install virus upon execution of specific actions. You should inform your employees not to open emails from anonymous sources or emails that look suspicious. Similarly, when browsing the internet, they should refrain from clicking links that might look somewhat suspicious.

Technological advances come with a downside and cybercrime is one that businesses all over the world including giants are struggling with. However, your business does not have to be a victim; with these few measures discussed can help you give a fighting chance for when the intrusion comes. You should also not limit your options to the few listed in this article. There are other measures you can take such as having an HTTP encryption protocol for your website. It offers up to 256-bit encryption for your website.
