4 Responsibilities You Never Realized HR Professionals Had

Posted on February 14, 2018 by Aaron

Human resource professionals are responsible for more than just dealing with the paperwork for new hires. The primary function of any HR department is to ensure that all laws and regulations are followed. If you were an HR professional, here are just a few of the responsibilities that you would have.

Managing Employee Relations

A large portion of what an HR professional does is manage employee grievances. You would be handling any employee conflicts that may arise. This means that you have to document and investigate each reported incident. This can take up a large part of the day in a big company. You’re responsible for abiding by the employment laws for the state in which the employee resides. For companies that are nationwide, one HR professional may have to know the laws for several states.

Creating a Safe Workplace

HR is privy to a large amount of information about those that are employed at the company. This information can be used to create a workplace that is safer for all of its employees. Many companies have the HR department write up the policies that are an integral part of the business. This includes things like addressing workplace violence concerns and social media policies. You might even be responsible for developing policies that deal with employee drug use.

Handling Compensation and Benefit Matters

Companies that offer health insurance have the HR department negotiate with the insurance providers. They have to take into consideration the cost to the company versus the benefit for the employees. They are also responsible for determining the compensation rates. Part of this equation is how much experience a candidate has as well as comparing it to other employees’ wages. Many companies are moving towards a set compensation plan in order to be fair to all employees. HR would be responsible for developing this plan.

Aiding Employee Relocations

In the event that an employee needed to relocate for the company, HR would facilitate this move. Some moving companies offer a corporate relocation plan. You would then coordinate with the moving company in order to ease the transition for the relocating employee. If the employee experienced any difficulties during the process, you would be responsible for resolving them. Some companies offer temporary housing to employees until they can find a permanent home. You may even be responsible for connecting the employee with a real estate agent to help them with the process.

Depending on the size of the company, HR can be responsible for a lot of different things. Becoming a member of a HR department allows you to wear several hats.
